Dr. Benishek Says "NO MORE" to Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence

Press Release

Date: May 1, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Dr. Dan Benishek (MI-01) stood up with many of his colleagues in the House to say "NO MORE" to sexual assault and domestic violence. An average of 237, 868 Americans are victims of assault ever year, which means someone is assaulted every 2 minutes.

"It is important we come together as a country to acknowledge that sexual assault and domestic violence are real problems that need to be addressed. Here in Congress we must work to ensure that victims receive the justice and the care that they deserve. As a doctor, I know how intensely personal these attacks can be for the victims. I stand with my colleagues in the House to fight the stigmas attached to sexual assault and make victims feel more comfortable coming forward. Staying quiet is not the answer," said Dr. Benishek, a general surgeon from Northern Michigan.

Last year, Dr. Benishek introduced H.R. 2016, the "Military Justice Improvement Act" in the House of Representatives. This bipartisan legislation will address the high level of sexual assaults that occur in the U.S. Military. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) introduced the same legislation in the U.S. Senate. Dr. Benishek will continue to work with his colleagues in the House to stand up to sexual assault and domestic violence and shed light on the importance of speaking up about the issues.
